This Palm OS application has been designed as a clinical tool for physicians managing heart failure patients. It is one of a series of initiatives being undertaken by the Canadian Cardiovascular Society to promote efficient and continuous dissemination of up to date guidelines to cardiologists, residents, and family physicians across the country. Guidelines are being produced in such downloadable electronic formats as Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Power Point, as well as hard-copy pamphlets and finally this Palm OS application.

The Palm OS format permits the compression of both the PowerPoint text and interlinked algorithmic information into a physician's shirt pocket. In addition, through Palm's hotsync and infrared transmission technology, the information can be instantly backed up, copied and shared amongst colleagues.

The first information package on the CCS Consensus for Management of Heart Failure will soon be available for download, in all electronic formats, from the Canadian Cardiovascular Society website at http://www.ccs.ca/.

Here is a brief description of the CCS CHF Guidelines application:

The CCS Consensus Guidelines for Treatment of Heart Faily application is opened by tapping on the Canadian Cardiovascular Society logo icon in the applications screen of your Palm OS handheld.

This is the first page that appears upon opening the application. It contains three links:
    1. An information button in the upper right corner for author and sponsorship information,
    2. Two buttons at the bottom of the screen that lead to main indexes for text and algorithms.

The two main indexes contain the main headings for each chapter of the application. Each main section page includes icon buttons in the lower right corner for easy navigation around the application.

Each screen contains a menu bar which is accessible by:
    1. Tapping the title bar at the top of the page
    2. tapping the silkscreen menu button on the Palm OS handheld
    3. Using the indicated Graffiti stroke on the Graffiti area of the handheld.

Toolbox pages contain the treatment algorithms which have been worked out by the consensus panelists. Buttons on these screens link with relevant information from elsewhere in the programme. For example, when users tap an "Initiate Treatment" button, they open the medication list containing details regarding dosage and choice. Images in these pages are also linked to pop-up information screens or relevant pages elsewhere in the application.

This interlinkability of information will make these handheld applications useful as a teaching and reference tool for all physicians.
